FED:Indon smuggling laws no cure-all: Keenan

The federal opposition says Indonesia's new laws criminalising people smuggling will
not stop the flow of asylum seekers reaching Australia's shores.

The long-awaited laws passed yesterday impose penalties of up to 15 years' prison on
people smugglers.

But the coalition's acting immigration spokesman MICHAEL KEENAN says the new laws are
no cure-all for the government's boat people "crisis".

He says the only effective way to deal with it is for Australia to change its policies
.. which continue to encourage people smugglers.
