Fed: Govt unlikely to give go-ahead to fourth TV network: Coonan

A new licence for a fourth commercial television station is reportedly unlikely to
get the go ahead from the federal government.

Communications Minister HELEN COONAN has told The Age newspaper she does not see a
great need for another commercial TV station.

She's told the paper she doesn't see a great need for a fourth network and, while the
sort of niche markets being talked about are largely being fulfilled through the Foxtel
pay-TV network.

Senator COONAN also signaled that she would like Telstra's share price to increase
before the federal government resumes serious talks about selling its remaining 51.05
per cent shareholding in the company.

She says she does not have a problem with Telstra acquiring more media assets.
